World Language Exploratory Curriculum

The objective of this course is to give students an introduction to the study of language, with a special emphasis on the four languages that are taught in the middle school. The curriculum will be as follows:

Introduction to Languages (mini unit)
What languages do you speak?
Why is language important?
What are the languages of the world?


Latin 
Who in the world speaks Latin?
Why does Latin still matter?
How can Latin help me understand English?

Students will be able to:
- read and understand basic Latin vocabulary
- translate simple Latin sentences and paragraphs
- make connections between Latin and English and other languages they may speak
- discuss ancient Roman life

Spanish
Who in the world speaks Spanish?
Why should I learn Spanish?
How is Spanish/Hispanic culture different than mine?

Students will be able to:
- read, listen to, and understand basic Spanish vocabulary
- carry on a basic conversation in Spanish
- make connections between Spanish, Latin, English, and other languages they may speak
- discuss some important aspects of Spanish/Hispanic culture

French
Who in the world speaks French?
Why should I learn French?
How is French/Francophone culture different than mine?

Students will be able to:
- read, listen to, and understand basic French vocabulary
- carry on a basic conversation in French
- make connections between French, Spanish, Latin, English, and other languages they may speak
- discuss some important aspects of French/Francophone culture

Mandarin Chinese (mini unit)
Who in the world speaks Mandarin?
Why should I learn Mandarin?
How is Chinese culture different than mine?

Students will be able to:
- say a few key phrases in Mandarin
- discuss some important aspects of Chinese culture
- make connections between Mandarin, French, Spanish, Latin, English, and other languages they may speak
